Dansville man returning home after release from Taliban

Written by on January 21, 2025

Ryan Corbett, a Dansville, NY resident detained by the Taliban since 2022, has been freed in a prisoner exchange. Corbett and another American were released in exchange for Khan Mohammed, who had been serving life sentences in the U.S. since 2008.

Corbett’s family, who evacuated Afghanistan in 2021, expressed gratitude to Presidents Biden and Trump, as well as the government of Qatar, for facilitating his release. Corbett had remained in Afghanistan to manage his visa and support his staff, but was detained during a visit to police headquarters.

In a statement, the Corbett family expressed relief at Ryan’s return but acknowledged the pain of families still awaiting the release of loved ones, pledging to advocate for their freedom.

Senator Chuck Schumer praised the bipartisan efforts that led to Corbett’s release, highlighting the persistence of Corbett’s wife and children. Corbett’s return marks a joyous moment for Western New York, with his family now beginning the healing process after his ordeal.
