D.C. to Remove “Black Lives Matter” Street Painting Amid Pressure from Trump and Republicans

Written by on March 5, 2025

The city of Washington, D.C. will remove the large street painting of “Black Lives Matter,” located near the White House, as Mayor Muriel Bowser faces pressure from President Donald Trump and the Republican-controlled Congress.

This decision marks a notable shift in Bowser’s stance toward Trump and Republican lawmakers since the president’s first term.

In June 2020, Bowser, a Democrat, had ordered the painting and renamed the intersection Black Lives Matter Plaza in response to protests against police brutality following George Floyd’s death.
