Confederate Group Sues Over Stone Mountain Slavery Exhibit

The Sons of Confederate Veterans filed a lawsuit against Georgia’s Stone Mountain Park, challenging the state’s plan to install a “truth-telling” exhibit about slavery, segregation, and white supremacy. The park, which features the largest Confederate monument in the U.S., has faced calls for change following the 2020 racial justice protests. The exhibit aims to contextualize the carving of Confederate leaders Davis, Lee, and Jackson, and highlight the site’s role in the KKK’s 1915 resurgence. The group argues the exhibit and the removal of Confederate flags from a walking trail violate state laws protecting Confederate symbols. Georgia allocated $11 million to the project, which is still in development. Supporters view it as a necessary reckoning with the South’s history, while opponents see it as erasure.
