Black Excellence Takes Center Stage at the 97th Academy Awards

The 97th Academy Awards celebrated Black talent with historic wins and unforgettable performances. While few Oscars were awarded to Black entertainers, stars like Cynthia Erivo, Doja Cat, and Queen Latifah made a lasting impact on stage.
Paul Tazewell made history as the first Black man to win Best Costume Design for his work on Wicked, delivering an emotional acceptance speech. Zoe Saldaña won Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first actress of Dominican heritage to receive the honor.

Musical highlights included Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande performing “Defying Gravity” and a tribute to The Wiz, while Doja Cat wowed with her rendition of “Diamonds Are Forever” in honor of the James Bond franchise.
Though he didn’t take home an award, Colman Domingo led a lively toast during a commercial break, celebrating Los Angeles and first responders. Queen Latifah paid tribute to Quincy Jones with a performance of “Ease on Down the Road”, introduced by Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg.

Despite limited wins, Black artists commanded the spotlight, proving their undeniable influence on Hollywood’s biggest night.
