A 25-year-old Florida woman, Jenny Saint Pierre, who had been missing since last summer, was found under extraordinary circumstances when she gave birth on a subway train in Midtown Manhattan. Saint Pierre was reported missing in September by her family, who had no knowledge of her whereabouts. On Wednesday, passengers on a southbound W train alerted authorities after she unexpectedly delivered her baby while the train was stopped at the 34th Street-Herald Square station.
Both mother and baby, referred to as “Baby W” by the New York City Transit president, were taken to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition. A viral video captured the dramatic moment, showing fellow passengers assisting during the birth. Saint Pierre’s family, unaware she was in New York, expressed relief and joy at the news. Her mother assured her that she and her newborn were welcome to return home.
New York City Transit officials praised the quick response of passengers and emergency personnel, calling the event a testament to the kindness of New Yorkers. This remarkable birth adds to the city’s history of babies being born on the subway.
