Anthony L. Jordan “The Doctor Who Would Come”
Written by luma on February 22, 2026
Dr. Anthony L. Jordan (1896–1971) arrived in Rochester during the Great Depression and revolutionized how our community viewed medical access. As the city’s second Black physician, he broke systemic barriers by prioritizing the poor and underserved at a time when healthcare was a luxury for many.
His grassroots commitment eventually scaled into a national model. The Jordan Health Center stands today as a testament to his vision one of the first five Federally Qualified Health Centers in the U.S.
We honor Dr. Jordan not just for his medical expertise, but for his belief that quality care is a fundamental right, not a privilege.
