Mayor Evans: Rochester Joining Lawsuit Against Federal Government

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans announced the city will join other sanctuary cities in a lawsuit against the federal government, following threats to strip funding from non-compliant jurisdictions. At the ROC Resilience Roundtable, held at New Genesis Missionary Baptist Church, Evans emphasized that cities should not be forced to enforce federal immigration laws. The lawsuit challenges recent Department of Homeland Security communications targeting sanctuary cities. Evans criticized ongoing policy uncertainty from Washington, citing concerns over potential cuts to Medicaid and other essential services. Rochester and Monroe County were recently listed as sanctuary jurisdictions, though DHS has since removed the list from its website. Local leaders rallied behind the mayor’s call for self-governance and equitable federal support.
