Mark Carney Elected as Canada’s Prime Minister, Vows to Stand Firm Against U.S. Tariff Threats

Written by on March 10, 2025

Mark Carney, former head of the UK and Canada’s central banks, was elected as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s successor, winning 86% of the votes in the federal Liberal party leadership race.

This makes him the first outsider without a significant political background to become Canadian Prime Minister. Carney steps into this role amid rising tensions with the U.S., particularly regarding President Trump’s threats of additional tariffs that could harm Canada’s export-driven economy.

In his victory speech, Carney took a firm stance against Trump, declaring, “We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready,” and warned that U.S. ambitions could threaten Canada’s way of life.

Throughout his campaign, he highlighted his economic expertise as crucial for addressing Trump’s tariff agenda and proposed retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. despite being a political novice.

Carney has held various roles in the Canadian government and led significant financial institutions, including the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England.
