In 1865, formerly enslaved people in Charleston, SC, organized one of the very first Memorial Day commemorations. They gave a proper burial to 257 Union soldiers and held a massive parade of 10,000 people to honor the “Martyrs of the Race Course.”
Today we remember the origin of this day and the lives given for freedom. 🇺🇸✨
